Jacob's Personality
Jacob Portman is the main character of the book Miss Pregerine's Home for Peculiar Children, and there are may ways to describe the kind of person that he is. My favorite words to describe him would be courageous, curious, and kind. He is courageous meaning he does bold acts and tries his best to be brave. He is curious because he is constantly asking questions about and wanting to find out about his grandfather's past. Lastly, Jacob is kind. Jacob never really does what people with authority want him to do , but he still tries his best to be nice to the people he cares about.
Courageous
One of the main themes of the story is courage. Jacob shows this attribute throughout the whole entire book. Jacob is only sixteen years old, yet he is still able to look for his grandfather in the middle of the night, in the woods. "I picked up a flashlight and headed for the trees."(Riggs 34) Another action that shows how courageous Jacob is, is when he entered the empty children's home alone. "There was no time to dally in the house's feral yard and reflect upon its malevolent shape - the way the doorless doorway seemed to swallow me as I dove through it," (Riggs 106) Jacob also entered a bog just to follow Emma, thinking he would die."Here lies bog boy, I thought. Or, more likely, Abandon hope, all ye who enter here. But enter I did." (Riggs 124) This shows that even though Jacob was scared, he still went ahead and did it.
Curious
Another way I would describe Jacob as would be curious. After listening to his grandfather's last words, Jacob is determined to figure out what Abe was trying to tell him. "I wanted to act like I didn't care about the last words, but I did." (Riggs 45) After Jacob finally had understood what his grandfather was trying to tell him, he wanted to go look for Ms. Peregrine himself. "Convincing my parents to let me spend part of my summer on a tiny island off the coast of Wales was no easy task."(Riggs 65) Once he had convinced his parents to let him go to the island, he did his best to get all of the information that he could. "But if it meant I'd finally be able to put my grandfather's mystery to rest and get on with my unextraordinary life, anything I had to endure would be worth it." (Riggs 68) When he was able to enter the house, he found a basement, and even though he knew it wouldn't be the safest thing to do, he still thought, "I have to go down there" (Riggs 112) All of these examples show how Jacob is curious, in the most determined way.
Kind
I would also describe Jacob as someone who is kind. Even though it may not seem like it, he still cares about others. Whenever he had talked about his grandfather's death, he said, "I was the only one who really loved him."(Riggs 40) Even though Jacob's father never finishes any of his books, when he was talking about the birds, Jacob thought "I did my best to encourage him and sound interested"(Riggs 66) Jacob also said, "I did what any gentlemen would do." (Riggs 198) whenever he was picking apples with Emma. "I felt bad for snooping."(Riggs 224) Jacob thought that when he was going through Emma's letters to his grandfather. Those are some examples of when Jacob had showed his kindness towards others.
